Founded in 1992, Eastern Connecticut Ballet (ECB) is a nonprofit, performing arts center, school and youth ballet company that provides exceptional dance training for children and adults of all ages. ECB enrolls 350 students annually from ages two through adult. Students come from all over Eastern Connecticut spanning the region from Westerly, Rhode Island, along the Connecticut shoreline to Branford, and as far north as Danielson.
Thirteen resident faculty members provide instruction in specific disciplines. All of the faculty members are former dancers that studied at prominent institutions such as The Juilliard School, the School of American Ballet, and the Boston Conservatory; all of them have performed professionally with such companies as the New York City Ballet, the Alvin Ailey American Repertory Dance Theater, the José Limón Dance Company, and the Dresden Staats Opera Ballet in Germany. ECB also hosts visiting faculty from major universities and prominent dance companies to teach master classes and the summer program.
Since 2002, ECB performs an enchanted seaport version of The Nutcracker at the Garde Arts Center in New London featuring over 100 ECB dancers that attracts an annual audience of over 2,500 people. Each spring, ECB students perform a showcase that demonstrates the progression of training through seven levels of its unified, classical ballet syllabus. They also perform classical repertory and original works where they refine artistry, movement quality, and expression.
As part of its community outreach activities, ECB conducts 14 Nutcracker-based educational school workshops, donates over 500 free tickets to The Nutcracker annually to community-based organizations serving families in need, including the US Military and presents two free children’s performances of The Nutcracker for 2,700 children attending over 30 private and public elementary schools. A critical component of ECB outreach is its huge commitment to providing scholarships for talented, underserved students. Each year, ECB awards over $60,000 in partial scholarships, hardship scholarships, and financial assistance to deserving students.

A world premiere ballet is ready to be shared in CT! Fly with Sophie as she leaps from the pages to the stage in Eastern CT Ballet’s World Premiere of a delightful ballet based upon Allegra Kent’s new award winning children’s book, Ballerina Swan. Ms. Kent is one of NYC Ballet’s most celebrated ballerinas and illustrator Emily Arnold McNully has won many prestigious awards including the Caldecott Medal. Original choreography by Eastern CT Ballet’s Artistic Director, Gloria Govrin, NYC Ballet soloist.
Laugh and cry as Sophie follows her dream, leaving the safety of her home on the water to humorous escapades in the ballet classroom. Will she fit in? Will she earn a role in her school’s production of Swan Lake? The ballet concludes with breathtaking variations from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, the perfect fusion of a whimsical children’s tale and the magical beauty of classical ballet.
The animals are having a Carnival! Lions, birds and fish, Oh My, will frolic on stage in a unique, double-bill family event. One of Camille Saint-Saën’s most famous musical masterpieces has inspired Ms. Govrin to create Carnival of the Animals. Watch enchanted animals come alive in this fanciful ballet. Each musical suite will describe an animal whose antics are introduced with a witty and imaginative poem.
